Tangem adds smart gas for self-custody

2026-04-23 · tangem

Tangem published a major wallet update: smart gas transactions. The feature is aimed at users moving into self-custody who get stuck because they don’t have native gas tokens for the first transfer.

What Happened

Tangem’s smart gas feature lets users pay network fees with supported stablecoins on major EVM chains. The implementation uses EIP-7702 and a custom contract flow to reduce the onboarding friction of self-custody.

The Cost of Data Loss

If users can’t transact after moving funds off an exchange, custody becomes a trap instead of a safeguard. Friction at this stage often leads to abandoned wallets, poor key hygiene, or leaving assets on centralized platforms longer than necessary.

How Cold Storage Prevents This

Cold storage works best when access is simple enough that users actually keep using it. Features like this reduce operational friction while preserving self-custody, which is the whole point of keeping assets off hot platforms.
