Tangem Expands Retail Self-Custody Access

2026-06-07 · tangem

Tangem announced on June 1 that its hardware wallets are now available at more than 200 Best Buy locations across the United States. The company framed the retail rollout as a way to reduce friction for people who want to move from exchange custody into self-custody. For cold-storage messaging, the update is important because access is often the first barrier to safer storage. When hardware wallets are easier to obtain, users have fewer excuses to leave critical assets exposed in online custodial accounts.

What Happened

Tangem said shoppers can now find dedicated Tangem displays in participating Best Buy locations. The post argues that physical retail availability shortens the path from deciding to self-custody to actually owning a hardware wallet.

The Cost of Data Loss

Users who keep assets on centralized exchanges remain exposed to exchange failures, account compromise, withdrawal freezes, and phishing-driven takeovers. If credentials or custodial access fail, the user may not control recovery.

How Cold Storage Prevents This

A hardware wallet moves control of private keys from online accounts to a physical self-custody device. Cold storage reduces dependence on exchange availability and gives users a durable recovery path based on their own backup discipline.
