Ledger adds Canton Coin with clear signing

2026-08-20 · ledger

Ledger's newest custody update brings Canton Coin to Ledger Wallet for retail users, expanding access to a network previously aimed more at validators and institutions. Ledger says users can now create a Canton account, send and receive Canton Coin, and secure those assets with a Ledger signer. The security angle is the bigger story for cold storage. Ledger is emphasizing hardware-backed Clear Signing, so users can see exactly what they are approving before a transaction is finalized.

What Happened

Ledger announced support for Canton Coin and said the integration includes hardware-backed Clear Signing for Canton-native assets. The company also highlighted Canton Network's privacy model, noting that transactions are not exposed on public block explorers in the way most retail blockchain activity is.

The Cost of Data Loss

In self-custody, one bad signature or one private-key exposure can be irreversible. When assets tied to institutional-style workflows or privacy-preserving systems are moved with weak signing practices, the damage is not just theft but also loss of auditability, control, and confidence in what was actually approved.

How Cold Storage Prevents This

Cold storage keeps the signing key off general-purpose devices and out of routine software attack paths. Hardware-backed signing and explicit on-device verification reduce the chance of blind approvals, while offline key custody makes it much harder for malware or phishing flows to turn a single compromised endpoint into total asset loss.
